The Community Conversations report, conducted from July to September 2024, sheds light on the experiences of residents in North Hyde and North Cranford. Led by C-Change West London, with the support of Heston West Big Local and the London Borough of Hounslow, the report explores key themes: jobs and money, learning and technology, safety and housing, and health and wellbeing. The findings aim to inform the council’s Equality Opportunity Action Plan.
The research engaged 101 residents, facilitated by an outstanding team that included Emily Ahmed, Juhi Kumra, Layba Nisar, Zainab Hussain, James Rose, Brooke Jones, Kapil Lund, Sharanjit Kaur, Friya Colaco, Zobia Masood, and Megha Dahdrai. Using innovative, trauma-informed methodologies like participatory workshops, mini-interviews, and creative techniques, the project provided a safe space for participants to share their lived experiences and ideas. Key insights include barriers to good work, such as high job entry requirements, discrimination, and inflexible work arrangements. Challenges around digital literacy, housing security, and access to healthcare were also highlighted, alongside the potential of inclusive opportunities like accessible job fairs, skill-building workshops, and community wellness programmes. The success of this project exemplifies community power in action. It demonstrates the potential of collaborative efforts between local authorities, grassroots organisations, and residents to foster equitable solutions. We extend immense gratitude to the London Borough of Hounslow, NHS North West London, Public Health Hounslow, and Cranford Community College for their contributions. Special thanks to Emily Ahmed for her exceptional training and guidance, and heartfelt appreciation to the youth facilitators and team for their dedication. Thanks also to Celia Golden and Arveen Graya from the London Borough of Hounslow for their support and encouragement throughout the project. This report marks a significant step in addressing inequalities, empowering voices, and strengthening our community. Click here to read the full report.

This summer, C-Change West London, the legacy organisation of Heston West Big Local, led a highly successful Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme in Heston and Cranford. Delivered in partnership with Creative Spaces London and Cranford Community College, the project was partly funded by the London Borough of Hounslow, Inspire Hounslow, and the London Community Foundation. The programme was a shining example of community collaboration and inclusivity, designed to bring children and young people together for a summer of growth, creativity, and connection. The dedicated team, including our incredible young staff members and facilitators, worked tirelessly to deliver a programme that supported over 63 children daily, including 29 children not eligible for the HAF programme. Thanks to additional funding sources, the programme remained inclusive, creating opportunities for children from all backgrounds, including those on free school meals and others in the local community. Exciting Activities and Memorable Experiences The programme was packed with engaging activities designed to cater to the children’s diverse interests. Highlights included:
Empowering Young Volunteers and Staff
The programme wasn’t just about the participants—it also provided meaningful opportunities for young people. Ten youth volunteers, aged 12 to 16, supported the sessions and developed skills in leadership, organisation, and teamwork. Two junior assistants, aged 15 and 18, gained their first paid employment experiences, contributing to the programme’s smooth delivery. Staff and volunteers reflected on their personal growth, noting improvements in their confidence, mental well-being, and sense of belonging. One young volunteer shared, "I feel so much more connected to my community and motivated to do more.” Another staff member said, "Working here has been an inspiring way to spend my summer, and I can’t wait to do more in the future.” Children's Feedback and Transformational Impact The children’s feedback highlighted the programme's positive impact. One child said they enjoyed “every single day, especially the trips and cooking,” while another shared how they gained confidence, made friends, and tried new activities for the first time. Stories of personal growth were evident, with many children leaving with enhanced self-esteem, improved skills, and a deeper sense of connection to their community. Big thanks to the London Borough of Hounslow, Cranford Community College, Inspire Hounslow and the London Community Foundation for their wonderful support. "Painting" is a thought-provoking short feature film directed by Arfhan Razak, which delicately blends sci-fi mystery with emotional depth. At its core, the film is about an extraterrestrial force stalking a small family, but beneath the surface, it dives into complex human emotions, familial relationships, and the journey of self-discovery. The film revolves around a young boy navigating inner turmoil as he grapples with his emotions. Living with his mother, estranged from his father, the story captures the boy's struggles through his perspective, as well as the significance of a mysterious painting that shapes the narrative. The production of "Painting" was an incredible community-driven effort. It was filmed over just a few days in collaboration with the Big Local Youth Film Project, supported by the London Borough of Hounslow and Local Trust. The project brought together local talent and volunteers. Director Arfhan Razak, a long-time staff member on the Heston West Big Local programme, spearheaded the project. Arfhan began his journey as a volunteer over seven years ago and grew into an integral part of the Heston West and Uxbridge community film clubs. This marked his debut as a short feature film director. The film had its premiere in July 2024 at the Lexi Cinema in London and featured a talented cast, including Tilde Jensen as the mother, Zack Cohen as the boy Wes, and Alex Dillon as the father. The project was enriched by the contributions of skilled professionals and volunteers, including Taz Virdee as the producer, Basharat Hussain as assistant director and gaffer, G Majestic on sound, Sehrish Iqbal as the make-up artist, Vikram Singh for animation references and concept art, and Sarah Williams, who captured stunning behind-the-scenes photos.
"Painting" reflects the artistic potential of local communities when they come together with a shared passion for storytelling. It’s a journey not just of a young boy but also of an emerging filmmaker finding his voice and platform. The film, now available for all to watch here. C-Change West London and Heston West Big Local has published the CORE20 Hounslow Resident Engagement Report, focusing on the healthcare challenges and opportunities in the diverse communities of Heston West and Cranford. This comprehensive study engaged over 100 residents through interviews, surveys, and focus groups, revealing critical barriers to healthcare access, such as social isolation, long GP appointment times, and stigma affecting minority and low-income groups.
The report highlights the importance of community-led initiatives to foster trust and improve wellbeing. Activities included wellbeing events, creative clubs, and communal hot lunches, offering invaluable insights into local issues and needs. Proposed solutions include flexible GP appointment times, enhanced use of pharmacists, and increased community engagement through outreach programmes. Big thanks to Public Health Hounslow for their ongoing support in making this vital work possible. Together, we aim to improve healthcare access and inclusivity for everyone in our community. The Zombie School film, an exciting collaboration between young people from Hounslow, Hillingdon and Lviv, highlights the remarkable potential of youth creativity and social action. Produced by members of the Big Local Youth Film Club in partnership with C-Change West London’s Hillingdon Youth Filmmaking and Social Action Club.
Bringing together Cranford Community College, One World Foundation’s Unbroken Cities project, and international partners in Ukraine, the project sought to unite young people from diverse backgrounds to address vital themes such as civic pride and community-building. The Zombie School film, featuring Ameliah, Yaryna, Jamal, Vikram, Alexia, Jessie, Shannon, Jayden, Kapil, Raha, Tarek, Viktoriia, Kallum, and Adam, captivated audiences at its premiere in May 2024. Hosted at Cranford Community College as part of the Unbroken Cities programme. The film was one of two innovative projects developed through Young Lviv, an initiative promoting partnerships between young people in Lviv and London. One project, school-based, explored environmental themes, while the second, community-focused, allowed participants to define their own creative direction. Guided by a peer-to-peer model, the initiative aimed to widen participation and nurture a sense of civic pride among its participants. The Zombie School film effectively combines imagination and social commentary, providing a platform for young creators to express their perspectives on community challenges. Its success is a powerful reminder of how storytelling and filmmaking can inspire positive change and connect communities across borders. By working with local and national partners and engaging in dynamic collaboration, the project has provided invaluable experiences for all involved, igniting a sense of shared purpose and laying the groundwork for future film initiatives. With heartfelt condolences, Taz, Debbie, and the HWBL Board Experience the highlights from the Heston In The Loop Community Engagement Event, which took place on September 16th 2023, at the Heston Community Centre. This exciting event was made possible through a wonderful partnership with the London Borough of Hounslow, ReLondon, C-Change West London and Let's Go Outside and Learn.
We were also supported by a few incredible organisations such as the Heston Action Group, Creative Spaces London, London Bike Hub, Crane Valley Partnership, and Kitche, among others. Our day was filled with a plenty of engaging activities that brought the community together in unforgettable ways. Participants had the chance to unleash their creativity by designing unique tote bags, explore the art of flower arranging, and even whip up delicious smoothies using pedal power! But it wasn't all just fun and games. Together with the local residents, we embarked on a journey to create a circular economy vision board. This collaborative effort allowed us to envision a brighter future for our community, one where sharing, reusing, recycling, and reducing waste are at the forefront of our mission. We are not only enhancing our environment but also boosting our overall wellbeing. In collaboration with Let's Go Outside and Learn and the Crane Valley Partnership, we also embarked on a community consultation focused on the River Crane. Our primary aim was to gain invaluable insights into the ways our community interacts with this natural resource, identify the obstacles and challenges hindering engagement, and gauge the sentiments of our residents toward their local surroundings. For more information about Heston In The Loop, and to get involved, please visit: https://www.hounslow.gov.uk/hestonintheloop To learn about the River Crane please visit: https://www.cranevalley.org.uk/ and Let's Go Outside and Learn, please visit: https://www.lgoal.org/ We had a fantastic celebration on Sunday, 7th May 2023, as our Big Local community came together to commemorate the King's Coronation. With approximately 150 local residents in attendance, we enjoyed a delightful afternoon tea filled with delicious cakes!
We want to express our heartfelt gratitude to all the volunteers, participants, and supporters who contributed to the success of this event.
