"Painting" is a thought-provoking short feature film directed by Arfhan Razak, which delicately blends sci-fi mystery with emotional depth. At its core, the film is about an extraterrestrial force stalking a small family, but beneath the surface, it dives into complex human emotions, familial relationships, and the journey of self-discovery. The film revolves around a young boy navigating inner turmoil as he grapples with his emotions. Living with his mother, estranged from his father, the story captures the boy's struggles through his perspective, as well as the significance of a mysterious painting that shapes the narrative. The production of "Painting" was an incredible community-driven effort. It was filmed over just a few days in collaboration with the Big Local Youth Film Project, supported by the London Borough of Hounslow and Local Trust. The project brought together local talent and volunteers. Director Arfhan Razak, a long-time staff member on the Heston West Big Local programme, spearheaded the project. Arfhan began his journey as a volunteer over seven years ago and grew into an integral part of the Heston West and Uxbridge community film clubs. This marked his debut as a short feature film director. The film had its premiere in July 2024 at the Lexi Cinema in London and featured a talented cast, including Tilde Jensen as the mother, Zack Cohen as the boy Wes, and Alex Dillon as the father. The project was enriched by the contributions of skilled professionals and volunteers, including Taz Virdee as the producer, Basharat Hussain as assistant director and gaffer, G Majestic on sound, Sehrish Iqbal as the make-up artist, Vikram Singh for animation references and concept art, and Sarah Williams, who captured stunning behind-the-scenes photos.
"Painting" reflects the artistic potential of local communities when they come together with a shared passion for storytelling. It’s a journey not just of a young boy but also of an emerging filmmaker finding his voice and platform. The film, now available for all to watch here.
