Welcome to the first Heston West Big Local blog. Each week a member of the Heston West Big Local Board will write a blog reflecting on the week just gone.

I am Alan Fraser, Chair of the Heston West  Big Local  Board. The HWBL Board runs the HWBL and consists mainly of local residents from the Big Local area.

I am fortunate this week to be able to write about my two favourite activities, the clean up day and sharing a rose day. This year it so happened that they fell on the same day…Sunday. I love these two events because I think they epitomise what HWBL is all about. It is about sharing, caring, kindness and volunteering.  Making our community a happier and healthier place to be.

The clean up day was an initiative suggested by one of our outstanding Youth Action Team member Callum. Since the initial day just over two years ago the number of people participating and the frequency has increased.  On Sunday (17th February 2019) we had over 60 people volunteer to make their community a better place by clearing and picking up rubbish.
A great example of HWBL working together to sort things out.

This is the second year that we have run a share a rose day.  Last year the impact was amazing and I will never forget the faces of the young volunteers who had distributed the roses. It was just sheer pleasure; pleasure in the joy they had brought to so many. Something so simple but its impact on people who sometimes feel lonely or isolated is immense.
