Callum, Ishan, Mike, Hilda, Haris, Rehan and Gurjeet were the heroes of our story. We started our clear up journey on the Redwood and after battling through the litter we descended towards the Brabazon. Nearly two hours later, we finished up with nine bags full of rubbish. During the Big Clear Up we came across a few local residents who showed us their admiration and appreciation for the children – we even had a drink pit stop thanks to a very kind resident on the Redwood. After the event the children were awarded with a certificate of appreciation for their fantastic effort and team work. Callum Wills, 12, who helped plan and organise the Big Clear Up said: “It was really good to see other kids get together and help tidy our area. It was also really cool using the new litter pickers.” 'In many ways this encapsulated what the Big Local is all about.' On the day we were also supported by three volunteers: Alan Fraser (our Chairperson), Debbie Noad (Committee Member) and Jane Coker (local resident). Alan Fraser said: “I thought it was great to see the young people engaging in this positive community action. It was even better to see local residents showing their appreciation with words of encouragement and spontaneous giving of refreshments to the children. In many ways this encapsulated what the Big Local is all about.” Debbie Noad added: “It was inspiring to see young people care about the community they live in and the area looked so much better afterwards, the community spirit is starting to return to Heston West.” We would like to thank all the children and their parents, our dedicated volunteers, Hounslow Highways for providing us with the equipment and support on the day and also Cranford Community College.
We hope this event inspired a few more residents to help keep our area more clean and safe for everyone to enjoy. If YOU would like to support our next Big Clear Up, please get in touch with Taz on [email protected] / 07702532710. |
