By Taz Virdee It’s time to grab your dancing shoes! Apna Virsa is coming to Heston West to start our FREE 8-week Bhangra Dance Classes for women. These classes promise to be high energy and high fun with a combination of fitness and traditional Indian dance. Each week participants also have the opportunity to learn a more in-depth piece of Bhangra choreography.
Seema Kamboj from Apna Virsa said: “This project will bring local women together to learn Bhangra dancing and improve fitness. Bhangra is a fun way of exercising along with building confidence, making new friends and engaging in a creative form of art. We are very excited to be part of the Big Local.” The 8-week classes will start on Tuesday 24th May from 7pm to 8pm at Cranford Community College, and is suitable for women over 16 and able to participate in moderate exercise. With the sun shinning over us we had around 60 people attend the two hour function on Sunday 8th May 2016. Children had the opportunity to explore their creativity with Let's Play Together We Create. We had Asha Creative Hearts provide the fantastic face painting and henna – which proved very popular as always! We also had live Dhol music from the talented college students (Prabkeen, Hunerdeep, Gurshaan and Jaytesh), art activities led by Sunshine of Hounslow and One You Hounslow with Flourish promoting their health and wellbeing services. The event proved to be quite a hit with the local residents: ‘Happy to see people come together – the Big Local is really exciting for our area’ Resident Bajinder said: “It is really great to see Redwood come alive – we really enjoyed the afternoon and especially loved the live Dhol music from the youngsters. Thank you Heston West Community Partnership for organising this amazing event.” Another resident Preeti added: “What a lovely day. I am so happy to see people come together – the Big Local is really exciting for our area. I’ll definitely be signing up to the Bhangra classes in May!” Committee member and event helper Debbie Noad said: “Great to see some new local residents enjoying the event at Redwood Estate, I met some new families and am excited that about them joining into our future activities.” Sarah Hoyle from Together We Create added: “The Heston West Vaisakhi was a brilliant, vibrant community event, one of the best I have been to in a long time. Working with Taz and the team over the last few months has been a great pleasure. Taz's commitment to the local community is exceptional. I hope Together We Create can continue working with the residents from Heston West for many more years to come.” Our next community event will be held on Sunday 12th June 2016 from 1-3pm on the Brabazon Open Green Spaces to celebrate the Queen’s 90th Birthday.
