On Sunday 5th June 2022 we held our Big Local and Summer of Culture Queen Platinum Jubilee Event at the Brabazon Community Centre. In partnership with Creative Spaces London (CSL) and Bantu Arts, we had over 130 residents join in on the celebrations. Bantu Arts were amazing delivering drumming masterclasses and live performances.
CSL inspired the community to create Jubilee-themed art and accessories. Our Big Local Youth Film Club participants captured the event, interviewing attendees including the London Borough of Hounslow’s newly elected leader and Heston West ward councillor Shantanu Rajawat. Overall, the event was a big success, drawing in residents from across the local area. By Layba Nisar On Tuesday 19th April 2022, we had our amazing group of participants from Heston West Big Local and Certitude take part in an art workshop led by Sarah and Lucie at Lets Go Outside and Learn. The type of art we were doing was called Hapa-Zome, Japanese technique of smashing flowers and leaves into fabric. The session was relaxing and fun and we created several pieces of art fabric. It was a unique and creative way to enjoy the outdoors whilst making art. Richard, one of our participants said: “I loved it today, really fun and lovely to see everyone together. I wanted to try something new and the fabrics told a different story.”

Heston West Big Local delivered several activities during February Half-Term, including: Valentine's Community Clean Up Day, Youth Music School, Outdoor Arts and Crafts with LGOAL and a visit to Gunnersbury Park Museum. In addition, the Big Local ran the Cooking Club in partnership with Chiswick House and Gardens, Art Social Club and One Stop Shop and Family Boxing Sessions. In total the Big Local engaged with over 80 people during half-term, many people getting involved for the first time since the pandemic. The Community Clean Up was a great success, 25 volunteers helped clear up the local estates and together collected over 20 full bags of rubbish, supported by Hounslow Highways. The trip to Gunnersbury Park Museum was enjoyed by the participants, together (supported by Food Connects) they created their own e-zine about food, recipes, culture and history. The Youth Music School was tasked with creating the Big Local's new charity song for C-Change West London.
The Outdoor Arts and Crafts with GLCOAL was a good success, celebrating Chinese New Year with fun and sociable activities, including: clay modelling, treasure hunt and lantern making. Overall the half-term week was successful in re-engaging local people back into the Big Local. |
